Allowing the Light In!

…that the light has come into the world…
John 3:19

Since the beginning of time there has been light. The sun’s energy sustains life on earth.

If anyone has experienced an eclipse, or even a partial eclipse, you will have some inkling of what life without any light would be. It illuminates the world around us. Lightness and darkness are incompatible. In the bible light has always symbolized the positive; holiness, goodness, wisdom, and hope.

Nevertheless, at times the world feels dark with much hatred, unrest, sadness, and helplessness. I know I am part of the brokenness of this world and it can feel overwhelming.

I often wonder how I could possibly make any difference and I am reminded of

Leonard Cohen’s words from The Anthem:

 Forget your perfect offering.
There is a crack, a crack, in everything.
That’s how the light gets in.

For me Jesus is that light! He is light personified.  It is he, that sustains my spiritual life, that shows me a way, that lightens the darkness. The world is broken but Jesus is the light, coming in through the cracks to bring a message of light into lives.

Let us pray…

Help me to accept my imperfections and doubts, to understand that Jesus’ light will find a way through the cracks.
