Devotion for Wednesday, March 18, The Third Week of Lent
Jesus said, Do not think that I have come to abolish the law or the prophets;
I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.
Think of the “law and the prophets” as everything that is true and everything that brings hope in your life. Think of them as your vision for what your life could be like… should be like. We have all had that, from the time we built with blocks and through our young years—a grand hope for life. Yet after a time, many of us found we got in our own way, or maybe fate seemed to?
Some of us decided just to lower our expectations. To say “I am going to be realistic. I am not settling, just older and wiser.”
But Jesus will not have it so. He says, “I came to fulfill.” And that he did. Never to abolish our dreams, but to fulfill our dreams, certainly in the end. But even now—these amazing moments of Holy Spirit when we are granted more than we ever would have known to ask for. Like being in love. And thinking “How in God’s name did I ever come to deserve you?” Or, seeing a sunset and thinking “I could never have imagined anything that beautiful.”
PRAYER
Oh God, fill my heart with your Holy Spirit.
Give me joy in seeking what is good.
Surprise me with your Glory.
