Beginning the Journey

“For all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves will be exalted.” Matthew 23:12

My friends today we begin our journey into this Lenten season. Throughout these forty days it is our hope that these devotionals might offer a moment of peace and reflection. Unlike in Advent, these devotionals will come from parishioners just like you. I am already amazed at the many ways God is speaking through this congregation, perhaps we will have the courage to listen.

As in any Ash Wednesday, today marks the opportunity to take up a new spiritual devotion. Fasting from certain foods, giving up distractions for more time with God, taking on a new practice of prayer, the list goes on and on.

Regardless of what we choose, it is important to remember that this season is not meant to be one of pride and accomplishment. Instead it is meant to humble ourselves, to literally mark our heads with dirt, and to ask for more of God in our hearts. My prayer for all of us, is that this Lent will be a time in which we do just that. Listening, praying, growing, may we find at Easter a resurrection of Christ in our heart, just as they found in that empty tomb.
