Devotion for Wednesday, April 1, The Fifth Week in Lent
Daniel 3:25 “But I see four men unbound, walking in the middle of the fire, and they are not hurt; and the fourth has the appearance of a god.”
In the book of Daniel we learn the story of three holy men who refuse to deny their love of God, even when they are threatened by the king to be thrown into “the fiery furnace.” The king, upon throwing them into the fire, is given a vision, not only of the men unharmed, but indeed, a fourth presence with them, who “has the appearance of a God.” Through the years, Christians have believed this was an appearance of Jesus.
My son loved this story as a child. What a relief, what a joy, to walk though harm’s way to safety. These days, the fear is palpable. For many, the fiery furnace is very very real indeed.
Yet, for us. For those who know the risen Lord, we see him at his strongest when we are at our weakest. He is most palpable when we are most needy.
PRAYER
Ever present yet sometimes illusive Jesus.
Send us a Word, a friend, a prayer, a sign;
that we may see you and know we are safe from all harm.
