A Sign?

“Woman, why do you involve me?” Jesus replied. “My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.”
John 2:4-5

At first blush, I am bothered by the Gospel of John’s talk of “signs.” Is ours a faith based on Vegas-style magic tricks? Healing and transformative works I can readily embrace, as someone very much in need of both. But water into wine?

Yet as I sit with Jesus’ first miracle, it seems Mary understands something more profound in the story. Why does she hear “yes” in what sounds to me like a clear, even harsh “no?” Her words point to a deep awareness that Jesus can and will direct us to the new Way.  Ultimately, the sign that we get is not cheap magic, but Jesus’ promise to be a guiding presence in our everyday lives.

Let us pray…

Heavenly Father, hold us in faith that your Son Jesus Christ shows us the Way to fuller life, the Way of Love. Let us turn to you without ceasing in our walk, whether down paths ordinary or extraordinary, secure in the knowledge that you are with us. Amen.
