Welcome the Light

The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who lived in a land of deep darkness-on them light has shined.

Isaiah 9:2

How often have you felt as though you are walking in darkness? I know for me there have been many forms of darkness in my life—from the purely personal to the global.  Times it seems that I am Eeyore, with a cloud that follows me no matter what I try to do.  It is completely counterintuitive, but one of my spiritual directors told me that the only way out of the dark times that try the soul is to actually sit in them/with them.  And I discovered that when indeed I accepted that there was nothing I could do to find my way out of the darkness, when I placed the darkness and the pain at Jesus’ feet, then and only then could I finally see the light that God has promised.

The truth of it is, that the light is always there for us.  Sometimes we just need to stop fighting the dark and trying to be our own light.  The light that cannot be overpowered by darkness is always there, waiting for us to turn our eyes to it.  God dwells with us, lighting our path in even the worst of circumstances.  So, just sit in the darkness, God’s light will lead you out.

Let us pray:

Light of the world, lighten our dark places we pray.  And when we cannot see the light because of our pain, help us to know that You are right there beside us.  Keep us always in your sight so when our sight fails us, we know that you continue to light our hearts and our paths.  Amen.
