Tell Your Story

One generation shall commend your works to another, and shall declare your mighty acts. Psalm 145:4

Today the Church commemorates the Lesser Feast of Dorthy L Sayers. Dorthy was an author and apologist, who often explored Christian Doctrine through her work. While she has certainly left her mark, she is not the first storyteller to use their talent for the spreading of the Gospel. Story telling is in some ways, an essential part of being a Christian.

Each Advent we begin a new liturgical year, and we begin to retell the story of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection. Each time we hear the eucharistic prayers, we are joining into the story of salvation as we are hearing it. We are a story telling people! Yet why does it often feel so hard to tell our own?

We all have a story to tell. We spend a lot of time on what Jesus did in Mary’s life. I wonder when was the last time we told someone what Jesus has done in ours. When we take the time to do such a thing, it’s amazing what comes up, and what that kind of reflection does to us. Perhaps as we once again prepare to tell the story of the birth of Christ, we each might use the season to examine the birth of Christ in our lives, and how we too live out this story of life, love, and grace. It may be just the thing the world needs to hear right now.

 Let us pray…

Almighty God, who strengthened your servant Dorothy Sayers with eloquence to defend Christian teaching: Keep us, we pray, steadfast in your true religion, that in constancy and peace we may always teach right doctrine, and teach doctrine rightly; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
