Do You Want to Be Made Well?

"When Jesus saw him lying there and knew that he had been there a long time, he said to him, ‘Do you want to be made well?’" - John 5:6

When we're truly sick — be it a fever, upset stomach, or something more life-threatening – of course we wish someone would come along, snap their fingers, and make us better.

But there are other pains, complaints, and afflictions in this life that we keep in a tight grasp, lumps of pain that we’ve worried into gleaming treasures of hurt. Sometimes, we even let these hurts define us. We refuse to part with our precious affliction.

When Jesus asks, “Do you want to be made well?" it need not be read as a rhetorical question. What hardened piece of ourselves might we turn over to our loving, healing friend if we could only find the will to answer, “Yes, Lord.”

 Let us pray…

Lord Christ, thank you for the healing grace you continually offer to me. Help me to want to be made well.
